Text Box: Bed Bugs removed from Myrtle Grove Fire Station

Text Box: NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – One step has been completed in the removal of bed bugs at a fire station in New Hanover County.

Pest control crews came in again and removed the bugs over the weekend. Now, everything has to be wiped down with a cleaning chemical. Then, firefighters can start moving things back inside the building. Officials said the worst spot was where the firefighters sleep at night, so crews had to spend overnight shifts in the daytime side of the station.

SMITHTOWN, New York (WABC) -- Workers at a Long Island nursing home say a bed bug problem is so bad, they keep moving patients room to room to escape the bugs.

"They're horrible they're all over the place and now to know you haven't been told," said Cindy. Cindy asked us to conceal her identity. Afraid speaking out will cost her her job as a nurse at the Avalon Gardens nursing home in Smithtown. She says managers at the facility notified a select group of staffers yesterday about the discovery of bedbugs Some workers told Eyewitnes News they were not informed. The state Health Department confirmed they're investigating a complaint. According to Cindy, the nursing home officials continue to shuffle residents from one room to another while new patients are being brought in.

NEW YORK -- New York City officials have long been limited in what they could do to get negligent landlords to address the spread of bedbugs.

But now city officials are announcing a policy change that could leave landlords facing harsher penalties. The City Council and housing and health officials said Tuesday that when inspectors find bedbug infestations the city will now issue Health Department abatement orders that carry stiffer penalties than the violations handed out by housing officials.

The change means that officials can lay out guidelines for the kind of pest control strategies landlords should adopt and can require landlords to treat the apartments surrounding the one with the infestation. If landlords don't comply, the city could ultimately take liens out on their properties that can be sold to collectors.

SARASOTA - A bedbug infestation in the Northeast has swiftly spread across Florida, state records show.

Last year, the number of reported bedbug cases at hotels, motels and apartments more than doubled from the previous year. Inspection reports kept by state officials who regulate hotel sanitation show bedbug cases increased from only eight in 2008 to 41 in 2009 to 96 in 2010. Nearly half of the state's 67 counties have had at least one report within the past three years, with Broward and Orange counties home to Fort Lauderdale and Orlando having the most. Broward County recorded 25 cases and Orange 20 since 2008.

Bedbugs tend to spread faster in large cities that attract international tourists and in cities that host large transient populations in multi-family apartment buildings. Experts point to frequent international travel and the bedbugs' ability to develop quick resistance to pesticides as the major causes for the increase in infestations here and nationally.

Although the data indicates a rising problem in Florida, it tells just a fraction of the story. Hotels, motels and apartments are not required to report bedbug infestations. All of the recorded cases stem from routine inspections and complaints filed with the state Department of Business and Professional Regulation. "We really don't have a good feel for the extent of the problem in Florida yet," said Michael Page, chief of the bureau of entomology and pest control at the Florida Division of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

Resorts - Hotels - Motels & Bed Bugs

The article listed Hotels and Motels by name. We did not want to list names. Just wanted to show the increase in complaints. Resorts, Motels, and Hotels are hit the worse. Exposing themselves to public embarrassment.

Did you know there are more than more than ONE THOUSAND Bed Bug complaints every month and growing.
